Solar Success Story 4

Type: Roof repairs and rooftop solar installation

Project name:
 Sharp Park Pump Station

Customer:
City of Pacifica, CA

Scope/size: Re-roof (12,600 square feet) and solar installation (51kW AC) on two buildings

Description: Designed and installed a medium-size solar system to provide power for the City of Pacifica’s waste water pump station. Also, removed the 50+-year-old clay tile roof, repaired the decking underneath and reinstalled the roof tiles--and with an additional 10-year warranty. Installed a 50-year comp roof under the solar system. This system installation is an example of PetersenDean’s value proposition as a roofing contractor and a solar integrator.

Challenges: The Sharp Park pump station is a 50+-year-old building that sits about 75 feet from the Pacific Ocean. This very extreme environment meant the solar system had to be engineered to withstand the highly corrosive salt air conditions. But even before we could install the solar system, we had to repair extensive damage to the existing tile roof; the tiles had to be removed one by one; those that were not broken had to be put aside to be re-installed once the underside of the roof was fixed. We then replaced the broken tiles and returned the unbroken tiles to the roof before installing the solar system.

The upside to this effort was that we did such a good job repairing the portion of the roof that was within the scope of this project that the City of Pacifica requested and received additional funding so that we could repair the remainder of the roof that had been outside the scope of the original project.
